The Stramp at Featherstone Sixth Form, Southall, UB2 5HF
Designed in collaboration with architect DSP.

The addition of a new sixth form building to Featherstone High School prompted many changes to the landscape and the streetscape.

A new plaza created, bounded by the smart new extension, needed to address the street, the sixth form building and the main reception - both during the normal school day and for out-of-hours public events.

A straightforward, DDA-compliant access to deal with the significant changes in level would have resulted in a long and differentiated route into the building, so Instead, normal steps were interwoven with short ramps to create an inclusive 'stramp', providing an access route that is shared by all-comers.

The result is an elegant podium with integrated access that deals with the morning rush to class, but also provides a 'hang-out' at the heart of the campus.
